Welcome back everyone!
I hope you all enjoyed your fall break! This week begins the second quarter of the year. Report cards will be posted on Thursday this week so please make sure to check on RenWeb to access your child's report card. The grading code we use for K-3 is M for mastering, D for developing, and E for emerging.
Here is what we will be working on in our classroom this week:
Reading - We have finished our first reading unit and the students will be assessed on all of the skills we have been working on. We also will be beginning our next lesson about using our senses. The students will hear the stories Listen, Listen and My 5 Senses. The high frequency word for the week is "see" and the sound we will be working on is /a/. Lastly we will be identifying onset and rime in words - this means we will be breaking words apart by their first sound and then the rest of the word (ie: b-at).
Handwriting - We will begin the week with an assessment on letters M and S from our first unit. We also will be learning the proper formation of uppercase and lowercase A.
Math - We begin a new chapter on soil and flat shapes. The students will be introduced to solid shapes as well as the terms face, edge, and corner. We also will be looking for flat shapes that can be found on the faces of solid shapes as well as noticing flat and solid shapes in real life items.
Religion - In preparation for All Saints Day we will begin to learn about saints. We will start by discussing what a saint is and why they are important and then will learn a little bit about a handful of saints. Kindergarten students will be participating in the Litany of the Saints on Monday November 4th. Information regarding this special event and the saint report will be sent home on Wednesday. The Signup Genius form to select a saint will go out this Friday (10/18) at 2:30 pm.
Social Studies/Science - We will learn about Christopher Columbus as an explorer and then the students will participate in a sink or float science activity.
Have a great week,
Miss Lauren Cordier
